Dental Hygiene
This program trains you to be a valuable asset in a high-tech modern dental office! You will learn practical skills such as taking patient medical and dental histories, teaching oral hygiene, scaling and polishing teeth, taking x-rays, and applying preventative agents. The program prepares you through courses, labs and clinical experiences on campus and in the community.

- Individuals desiring a career in dental assisting should, if possible, take biology, mathematics, English, humanities, and psychology courses prior to entering the program.
- Applicants must present evidence of good physical and mental health.

Related Certifications
Graduates must pass the written National Board Dental Hygiene Exam and the clinical Council of Interstate Testing (CITA) Regional Exam in order to be licensed to practice Dental Hygiene in North Carolina. Background checks will be conducted before licensure by the N.C. Board of Dental Examiners.

Program Requirements
Students must earn a grade of C or better in all curriculum courses in order to progress in the program.
In addition to tuition and textbooks, costs of this program include a laboratory fee, uniforms, shoes, instruments, physical and dental examinations, immunizations, health insurance, cost of licensure exams and miscellaneous other fees.
Opportunities
Employment: Almost all dental hygienists work in private or public dentists’ offices. A small number of hygienists worked in other settings, including offices of physicians, outpatient clinics, dental supply companies, and schools. Dental hygienists work closely with dentists.
Salary: Salaries for full-time employment range from $32,000 to $55,000 per year, depending upon geographic location, demand and experience.
